Felt a “swarm” of earthquakes in central Washington County

As many as 12 small earthquakes have been reported in central Washington County in the past several weeks, forming a “swarm,” according to Henry Perry of the Maine Geological Survey.

Perry says local lore says the earthquakes are caused by a fault line running under Centerville, but that’s only partially true.

Instead of a long fault line under Centerville, like California’s San Andreas Fault, the recent earthquakes in Washington County are caused by rocks shattering randomly within the Earth’s crust. Every break is technically wrong.

Scientists know that Maine does not have an active fault line, thanks to the work of several seismologists who have come to study Maine’s earthquakes.

“This is a new type of data that we didn’t have before because it’s so small, and if we get a lot of it in one small place, there’s an opportunity for seismologists to analyze it and get a better idea of ​​the process of generating these little swarms.”
