Puerto Rico’s Museo de Arte de Ponce, which houses one of the largest collections of Victorian art outside the UK, will send some of its greatest works, including the famous Flaming June, to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

The Museo de Arte de Ponce will present five paintings to the Met from October 8 through February 2024: Frederic Leighton Flaming June (1895); John Everett Millais, Escape from the Heretic, 1559 (1857); And all three scenes from the series “Small Briar Rose” by Sir Edward Bourne-Jones (1871-1873).

“These five remarkable paintings are part of Puerto Rico’s cultural heritage,” Museo de Arte de Ponce director, Cheryl Hartop, says in the release. “Flaming June is one of the island’s most beloved artworks, and one of the most famous and reproduced in British art.”

Curators on both sides paired the loans with corresponding artworks from the Met collection—most notably Flaming June and Leighton’s Lachrymae (1894-1895).

“These are two of Leighton’s last major oils, created during the same painting campaign, and first shown together at the artist’s studio in 1895,” according to a press release. “This is the first time they have been shown side by side.”

In 1988, the Met borrowed works from the Arte de Ponce for “José Campeche and His Time, Puerto Rico,” and the museum loaned the New York Foundation Louis Maisonette Crespo Pas de Ducs (1953) for “Surrealism Beyond Borders,” which continued From October 2021 until January 2022.

Prior to displaying these five paintings, Flaming June will receive a technical inspection from professionals at the Met. A study day and additional public programming will celebrate the collaboration.
