Balochistan: Explosion hits Qalat district after earthquake, one person killed

The explosion occurred on the outskirts of Qalat in Balochistan while work was underway, injuring several other employees.

Balochistan: Amid continuous floods that have caused widespread destruction across Pakistan, a group of militants detonated an improvised explosive device on Wednesday at the work site of Pakistan Petroleum Company Limited, killing a local employee.

The accident occurred on the outskirts of Qalat in Balochistan while work was underway, injuring several other employees. The attack by unknown assailants came on the day a moderate-sized earthquake hit the area and surrounding areas, Dawn reported.

According to the officials, the explosion occurred in the Sheikhri area on the outskirts of the town of Qalat, near the work site of the PPL company, when an explosive device planted at the site exploded while work was continuing. A 4.7 on the Richter scale hit parts of the Kalat area, and tremors were felt in Kalat and nearby areas forcing residents to leave their homes, Dunn said.

No casualties or injuries were reported so far, as the earthquake hit Qalat when Balochistan was also experiencing floods caused by heavy monsoon rains. The devastating floods inundated a third of Pakistan with complete damage to thousands of roads, homes, power towers and bridges.

Several cases of bomb attacks have been reported in Pakistan in recent months, and Balochistan was the most volatile province in 2021 with 170 deaths recorded in 103 militant attacks. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa witnessed 162 attacks, killing 180 people. In Sindh, 15 attacks by militants left 23 people dead, while 10 attacks in Punjab left 10 people dead.
