DOST-PHIVOLCS calls for the construction of earthquake-resistant buildings in Baguio

QUEZON CITY – Due to its proximity to active faults, the highly urbanized city of Baguio has experienced strong earthquakes in the past, including the M7.8 16 July 1990 Luzon earthquake which caused loss of life and extensive damage to infrastructure, and the M7.0 Northwest Luzon earthquake in July 27, 2022 which led to many structural damages. These seismic events highlight the importance of making the human-built structures in Baguio city earthquake resistant.

To further this call, the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-PHIVOLCS) will launch “Bajiu City Shake Hazard Maps (BCGSHM)” on September 08, 2022, at 8:30 am at Fortune Hong Kong Seafood Restaurant, Baguio City. It is a compilation of maps that provide information on ground movement levels and site response during strong earthquakes based on the characteristics of the underlying soil, rock layers, and the effects of specific topography, in this case, mountainous terrain such as Baguio City. These maps can be a reference for structural engineers in the design and construction of earthquake-resistant buildings and infrastructure in Baguio City.

A press conference entitled “InfoSentro sa PHIVOLCS” and a technical workshop will also be held to meet the needs of participants from Baguio City Government, private companies, land developers, universities within Baguio City and other stakeholders. This event will help them interpret the data presented in the maps, determine ground conditions at the site using diffusion and estimate the natural vibration of buildings to identify existing structures that may be subject to intense ground shaking. Activities aim to ensure that the maps are effectively used by stakeholders in comprehensive land use, development planning and seismic risk reduction efforts to prevent loss of life and property damage.

BCGSHM is one of the outputs of the project “Passive Seismic Layers of Irregular Topography (PSSIT) Applied to Mountainous Regions in Baguio City” funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology.
