Videos allegedly showing Chinese residents being prevented from escaping an earthquake due to the coronavirus lockdown have sparked outrage on social media.

Residents in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China, have been told to stay indoors due to the coronavirus lockdown despite a 6.8-magnitude earthquake that toppled buildings and killed at least 65 people, the BBC reported.

In one of the videos posted on social media, with the caption “So terrifying, we all went down because of the earthquake, but we can’t get out,” residents shouted to be pulled out by a guard standing outside.

“Hurry up, open the door, it’s an earthquake!” One resident reportedly shouted.

“The earthquake is already over,” shouted the guard.

Chengdu is currently under severe restrictions due to the coronavirus, and in some cases, apartment buildings where a person has tested positive are classified as “closed areas” and residents are prohibited from leaving the building whether or not they are infected.

Across China, 65 million citizens in more than 30 cities have been placed under strict lockdown measures due to the coronavirus, according to Chinese business magazine Caixin.

In another video, a loudspeaker message was reportedly telling residents to “go home” because it was “just an earthquake”.

A man told the BBC that he tried to escape from the 30-storey building, was trapped at the gates, and was surrounded by people arguing about how to get out.

The BBC reported that social media users in China are criticizing the lockdowns in video comments, including one post that said it was a “joke” and that there was even debate over whether citizens should be able to flee buildings in the event of an earthquake. .

Another user commented on social media sarcastically: “I think it’s good to die inside the building, at least I didn’t get infected.”

The China Earthquake Networks Center said the 6.8-magnitude earthquake hit a mountainous area in Luoding County, Sichuan Province, shortly after Monday afternoon.

Sichuan Province, which sits on the edge of the Tibetan Plateau where tectonic plates meet, experiences earthquakes on a regular basis. Two earthquakes in June killed at least four people.
