China earthquake death toll rises to 74

Rescue efforts are continuing after a 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck about 43 kilometers (26 miles) southeast of Kangding city in Sichuan province.

The death toll from a powerful earthquake that struck southwest China rose to 74, state media reported, Wednesday, as thousands were evacuated to temporary shelters and torrential rain threatened to trigger more landslides.

The earthquake, measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale, struck about 43 kilometers (26 miles) southeast of Kangding city in Sichuan Province at a depth of 10 kilometers on Monday, according to the US Geological Survey.

The state-run People’s Daily said 34 people had died in Yan City, Sichuan Province, while 40 deaths were reported in neighboring Ganzi County.

More than 21,000 people have been evacuated from areas prone to landslides or building collapses, state broadcaster CCTV said.

Rescuers are still roaming remote villages in the country’s mountainous southwest in a race to find quake survivors, and dozens of people are believed to be stranded or missing.

“My head was stuck between two pillars, and my legs were sandwiched between tables,” a woman who had been stuck for nearly five hours under a collapsed hotel in Moxie Township, one of the hardest-hit areas of the state, told the state. Run Red Star News.

“I could only lie in one position, and I surrendered to my Egypt. I don’t know who saved me,” she added, saying she was worried about her children and whether their school building had collapsed.

Dramatic footage broadcast by state broadcaster CCTV showed kindergarten teachers waking up taking children’s naps and pushing them out when the earthquake struck.

Residents told AFP that the quake also shook buildings in the provincial capital Chengdu – where millions are languishing in their homes under a strict COVID-19 ban – and in the nearby major city of Chongqing.

The China Earthquake Networks Center said at least 13 aftershocks of magnitude 3.0 and above had been detected as of 7 a.m. local time (2300 GMT) on Tuesday.

The regional grid operator said yesterday that electricity has been restored to more than 22,000 homes and that 12 emergency shelters in Yan have been connected to a temporary power source after the quake caused blackouts in parts of the countryside.

Beijing’s cabinet said on Monday it had dispatched a special team to lead the effort, with CCTV reported dispatching more than 6,500 people as part of the emergency rescue response.

But the China Meteorological Administration warned that the quake-hit areas would see “heavy rain” until Thursday and landslides could hamper rescue work.
