Chinese officials impose restrictions on coronavirus during earthquake

Officials in southwest China are still imposing restrictions on the coronavirus even after a strong earthquake hit the region.

A 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck Monday near Chengdu, Sichuan Province. The city has a population of about 21 million. Buildings in Chengdu and other areas shook during the event. But there were no reports of structural damage.

The earthquake caused damage in areas outside Chengdu and at least 65 people were reported killed. The epicenter of the earthquake was in a mountainous area of Luoding County, about 200 kilometers from Chengdu. The region is located on the edge of the Tibetan Plateau.

Chengdu has recorded only a small number of COVID-19 cases. But the current lockdown is the most severe in China since officials in Shanghai imposed severe restrictions in April and May this year. These restrictions have led to rare citizen protests in person and online.

In this photo released by Xinhua News Agency, medical workers carry patients to a safe area in Renmin Hospital of Ximian County in Yan City, following the earthquake in southwest China’s Sichuan Province, on Monday, Sept. 5, 2022.

In all, 65 million Chinese in 33 cities are currently under various levels of lockdown. The restrictions are intended to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Government officials have warned against travel across the country during upcoming national holidays.

The outbreak was reported in 103 Chinese cities, the highest rate since the early days of the epidemic.

Most people in Chengdu have been ordered to stay at home. In the eastern port city of Tianjin, classes were moved online after a string of new cases were reported.

China continued to support a “no-coronavirus” policy that requires widespread testing, community closures, and the use of face coverings. The restrictions run counter to current advice from the World Health Organization. It also differs from the moves most countries have taken to open up after more than two years of pandemic measures.

The virus that causes COVID-19 first appeared in the central Chinese city of Wuhan in late 2019.

On Tuesday, China reported 1,499 new cases of local infection, with most people showing no signs of illness. Sichuan accounted for 138 of the total number.

The earthquake knocked out power and destroyed buildings in the historic mountain town of Moxi in Gars Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture. At least 37 people were reported killed there. The new China News Agency (Xinhua) reported that tents were set up to move more than 50,000 people from homes made unsafe by the earthquake.

Official CCTV station showed rescue workers dragging a woman from a collapsed house in Moxie. The woman looked healthy. About 150 people in the area were reported to have been injured.

State media reported that 248 people were injured, most of them in Moxie, and 16 others were missing.

Besides the deaths, officials reported, landslides damaged homes, caused electrical problems and trapped people behind a newly created lake. A landslide blocked a rural highway, leaving it covered in boulders.

The earthquake and shutdown come shortly after a heat wave and severe drought conditions. Such conditions led to water shortages and power outages due to Sichuan’s dependence on hydropower.
