At least 66 people were killed in a 6.6-magnitude earthquake that struck southwest China’s Sichuan Province Monday night, spreading panic and cutting lines of communication. On Tuesday, official media reported that 248 injuries have been reported so far, and at least 12 people are still missing.

The death toll is likely to rise. Emergency workers and firefighters evacuated more than 11,000 residents to safety by Tuesday afternoon, even as aftershocks were reported during the day.

The quake hit Sichuan’s Luoding county, but tremors were felt in the provincial capital Chengdu, more than 200 kilometers away.

The China Earthquake Networks Center said the epicenter was in Luoding, a town in a remote mountainous area of ​​the province.

At least 38 people were killed in Ganzi Tibet Autonomous Prefecture, and 28 others died in Ximian County, Yan City, Xinhua News Agency reported.

State TV reported that while Sichuan activated the highest level of emergency response to the earthquake, China raised the earthquake emergency response to the second level. “More than 200 people are still trapped in the quake-hit Hailogo Scenic spot, a forest and glacier nature reserve,” the state TV report said.

“The earthquake destroyed infrastructure facilities such as water supply, electricity, transportation and communications,” the Xinhua report said.

Teams from the Ministry of Emergency Management, the Ministry of Natural Resources and the National Health Commission were dispatched to the quake-hit area.

Efforts are continuing to repair the facilities and ensure that relief supplies reach those affected by the disaster.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has ordered all-out rescue efforts to minimize losses, stressing that saving lives should be considered the primary task.

Sichuan has a history of deadly earthquakes. In May 2008, an 8-magnitude earthquake struck Wenchuan, killing more than 80,000 people. In 2013, a 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck the city of Lushan, killing 196 people.
