China earthquake death toll rises to 82

(AFP) – The death toll from a powerful earthquake in southwest China has risen to 82, state media reported Thursday, as rain and possible mudslides threatened the search for dozens of missing people.

The earthquake, measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale, struck about 43 kilometers (26 miles) southeast of Kangding city in Sichuan province at a depth of 10 kilometers on Monday, according to the US Geological Survey, forcing thousands to resettle in temporary camps.

State broadcaster CCTV said 46 people died in Ganzi county, near the epicenter, while 36 deaths were reported in the neighboring city of Yan.

CCTV reported that more than 270 were injured, while the number of missing remained at 35.

The National Weather Service said moderate rain will continue in the quake-hit area on Thursday and Friday, with some local heavy rain.

“Since the geological conditions after the earthquake are inherently fragile, and the effect of additional precipitation may lead to landslides and mudslides, the local area needs to beware of secondary disasters,” the China Meteorological Administration said.

The People’s Liberation Army, paramilitary police and fire rescue services have sent more than 10,000 workers to the area, who have continued search operations and landslide cleanup efforts in the remote countryside.

Rescue workers braved floods and landslides caused by aftershocks to move villagers from their destroyed homes, often having to haul them across mountainous terrain on ropes and stretchers.

A member of the rescue team named Tan Ki told CCTV, “We also waded through the water to reach Xingfu village. The mountain torrents contain boulders … stones that you can’t see in the water are the biggest threat to us.”

“We quickly used ropes to build a human ladder…when we started wading through the water, the water reached our knees and thighs. By the time we got to safety, the sudden flood had reached waist level.”

The state-owned People’s Daily reported that more than 22,000 people have so far resettled in 124 temporary sites across Ganzi and Yan.

More than 21,000 students and school staff in Shimian County – where Yan is located – were safely evacuated within one minute of the quake, the newspaper said.

It added that nearly 1,800 schools in the area had reopened by Wednesday.

The China Youth Daily reported that workers raced to repair hundreds of kilometers of electrical and optical cable, with “basic restoration” of communications in affected areas as of Thursday.

So far, the report said, local authorities have received more than 100 million yuan ($14 million) in disaster relief donations.

Residents told AFP that the quake also shook buildings in the provincial capital Chengdu – where millions are languishing in their homes under a strict COVID-19 ban – and in the nearby major city of Chongqing.
