Dozens are still missing after a 6.8-magnitude earthquake hit Sichuan Province, killing at least 82 people.

Rain, floods and mudslides have hit the search for dozens of missing people, days after a powerful earthquake hit a mountainous region in southwest China, killing at least 82 people.

The National Weather Service issued a yellow alert through Thursday evening warning of a “risk of geological disaster” and forecast moderate rains to continue into Friday with heavy rains in some areas.

The 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck 43 kilometers southeast of Kangding city in Sichuan province at a depth of 10 kilometers on Monday, according to the US Geological Survey, forcing thousands to resettle in temporary camps.

State broadcaster CCTV said 46 people died in Ganzi county, near the epicenter, while 36 deaths were reported in the neighboring city of Yan.

CCTV reported that more than 270 others were injured, while the number of missing remained at 35.

“Since the geological conditions after the earthquake are inherently fragile, and the effect of additional precipitation may lead to landslides and mudslides, the local area needs to beware of secondary disasters,” the China Meteorological Administration said.

The People’s Liberation Army, paramilitary police and fire rescue services have sent more than 10,000 workers to the area, who have continued search operations and landslide cleanup efforts in the remote countryside.

China’s state-run news newspaper, Global Times, reported on Tuesday that more than 50,000 people had been relocated in the aftermath of the quake.

State media reported that 243 houses had collapsed and 13,010 houses had been damaged.

Workers raced to repair hundreds of kilometers of electrical and optical cable, with communications “restored” in affected areas from Thursday, the China Youth Daily reported.

The report said local authorities have received 100 million yuan ($14 million) in disaster relief donations so far, and the Sichuan government has issued an emergency notice asking local authorities to disburse a hardship allowance to the affected people.
