Strong earthquakes hit parts of West Papua province, Indonesia | News

At least four earthquakes with magnitudes between 6.2 and 5.5 were recorded, although there were no early reports of damage or injuries.

A series of strong inland earthquakes rocked Indonesia’s far eastern province of West Papua, but there were no immediate reports of major damage or injuries.

Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency said at least four earthquakes with a magnitude of between 6.2 and 5.5 were recorded on Saturday and were centered about 37 kilometers (23 miles) northwest of Mambramo Central District in West Papua.

The agency said the quakes were at a depth of 16 km.

So far, there have been no reports of damage from the earthquake. Modeling results show that this earthquake has no tsunami potential, the agency said on its website.

Daryono, who heads the Earthquake and Tsunami Mitigation Division, said the earthquakes pose no tsunami risk.

“There is no report on the impact of the damage,” said Dariono, who uses one name.

He said the earthquakes were caused by an eruption in the Mambramo Angak Fault.

Indonesia is a seismically active archipelago of about 270 million people and is frequently hit by earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and tsunamis.

Indonesia lies on both sides of the “Pacific Ring of Fire”, where the various tectonic plates of the Earth’s crust meet and cause frequent seismic activity.

With a population of about 1.2 million, West Papua is one of the least populous provinces in Indonesia.

In February, a 6.2-magnitude earthquake killed at least 25 people and injured more than 460 in West Sumatra province. In January 2021, a 6.2-magnitude earthquake killed more than 100 people and injured nearly 6,500 in West Sulawesi Province.

A massive earthquake off the coast of Aceh in 2004 triggered a tsunami that killed an estimated 230,000 people in a dozen countries around the world.

On Saturday, the US Geological Survey measured the quakes between 6.1 and 5.9 at a depth of 19 to 33 kilometers (11.8 to 20.5 miles).
