Road collapses after massive earthquake rocked Papua New Guinea

Papua New Guinea lies on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, causing it to experience frequent earthquakes.

At least five people were killed and several homes damaged after a devastating earthquake hit Papua New Guinea on Sunday. The earthquake, with a magnitude of 7.6, struck at a depth of 90 kilometers near the town of Kainanto.

While the extent of the damage remains unclear, a video posted on social media showed cracked roads, destroyed cars and rubble strewn across highways.

According to ANI, the earthquake also caused landslides. Power outages were also reported in parts of PNG, where widespread tremors were felt in the province from towns near the epicenter to the capital, Port Moresby.

The US Geological Survey issued a tsunami warning, but later said the threat was “now over”.

The Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea, James Marab, stated that the earthquake was “tremendous” and asked people to be careful. He added that national and regional disaster agencies, as well as leaders, have been asked to assess the scale of damage and injuries to people.

Separately, the United Nations reported that people were injured by falling buildings or debris, and some health centers, homes, country roads and highways were damaged.

Papua New Guinea is prone to earthquakes because it is located along the Pacific “Ring of Fire”. A similar-sized earthquake in the country’s remote highlands in 2018 killed more than 60 people, destroyed homes, triggered landslides and damaged a major gas station. According to ANI, about 22 earthquakes of magnitude 7.5 have been recorded in New Guinea since 1900.
