At least three people were killed and residents injured after a devastating earthquake hit Papua New Guinea.

The US Geological Survey confirmed a 7.6-magnitude earthquake at a depth of 61 kilometers near the eastern town of Kainanto on Sunday morning.

Thousands of terrified residents and tourists ran out of collapsed homes and apartment buildings that began swaying in the sky.

Three workers were killed in a landslide in the gold mining town of Wau, about 330 kilometers southeast of where the quake struck, Morobi County Disaster Management Director Charlie Massang said hours later.

An unknown number of other residents were injured by falling debris.

Videos posted on social media showed a single mass shaking as some of the cladding fell and other parts of the exterior were damaged.

Locals can be seen standing in the open, trying to balance themselves while filming the carnage unfolding before their eyes.

Other photos showed a group of children standing outside their partially destroyed home, cracks in several major roads, and soil liquefaction from the powerful earthquake.

The quake also triggered a tsunami warning minutes later.

But the USGS retracted the announcement, saying it had “now passed”.

But she warned of the possibility of “slight fluctuations in sea level in some coastal areas.”

One resident, a geologist, revealed that the ground shook for at least a minute while trying to calm dozens of his street neighbors.

“It’s common to feel earthquakes here, but they usually don’t last long and aren’t as violent as this,” Renaji Rafu told The Associated Press.

“It was very intense.”

Friends who live near the epicenter told him about debris strewn across the roads, cracked bitumen and broken pipes.

There may be more deaths but that won’t be known for some days due to the remote location of some of the quake-hit areas.

A 7.5-magnitude earthquake hit the central region of the country in 2018 and killed 125 people – but it took some time to report.

Mr Masange believes the area has been spared seeing more deaths due to the location’s remoteness.

Papua New Guinea is located northeast of Australia and sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire” – the arc of seismic faults where most earthquakes and volcanic activity occur.
