China’s Sichuan returned to normal as the death toll from the earthquake reached 93

BEIJING (Reuters) – Officials in China’s Sichuan Province, which was hit by an earthquake that killed 93 last week, have reduced the level of emergency response as most transportation, electricity and communications services resume, state media reported on Tuesday.

CCTV news channel said the strongest earthquake to hit the province in five years killed 55 in an area known as Ganzi and 38 in Yan City.

Rescue efforts are still underway for 25 missing persons, including nine in Luding.

Celebrations were held in several cities on Monday to commemorate the victims, according to a WeChat account of the Sichuan provincial government.

Rain in Sichuan has hampered rescue efforts over the past week, and is expected to continue across the region on Tuesday and Wednesday, triggering landslide warnings in northeast Zhejiang, Luoding, southern Yunnan, northwest Xinjiang and elsewhere.
