Several viral videos were captured the moment the Earth opened up during a massive 7.6-magnitude earthquake in Papua New Guinea.

The island’s police commissioner, David Manning, said, in a statement, that the earthquake that struck the southwestern Pacific island on Sunday morning killed at least seven people and caused extensive damage to infrastructure. A second earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale struck one hour later. Citizens and security cameras recorded videos of the devastation across the island, some showing cracks in the ground.

The US National Tsunami Warning Center sent out a tsunami warning from the earthquake, according to FoxWeather, but it was later canceled.

Manning said the seven deaths confirmed so far were all due to landslides caused by the earthquake. Dozens of injured were also reported. However, the earthquake occurred deep in the earth, which lessened the damage it could have caused.

“This was a big earthquake, but it was deep below ground level, which means the damage was less than if the epicenter was closer to the surface,” Manning said.
