Magnitude 4.4 earthquake shakes Wine Country, California

A 4.4-magnitude earthquake shook Wine Country in California and was widely felt in the San Francisco Bay Area on Tuesday evening.

The quake struck at 6:39 p.m. at a depth of 4.6 miles near the city of Santa Rosa, Sonoma County in North Bay, according to the US Geological Survey.

The epicenter was 1.8 miles south of Santa Rosa and 48 miles northwest of Berkeley. It is felt as far south as San Francisco and as far north as Lake Clear, according to USGS’ ShakeMap. As of 7:15 p.m., more than 2,700 people reported feeling the quake to the USGS.

Many have jumped on social media to report how they felt the earthquake.

One Twitter user wrote: “The first earthquake I’ve felt since moving to California almost 5 years ago.” “Needless to say I was a little shaken.”

Another wrote, “I’m in Santa Rosa and both of my cats are under my bed.” “I grew up with earthquakes, but… years have passed. Could it be decades?”

The earthquake occurred on the Rodgers Creek Fault, which is part of the San Andreas System. “The Rodgers Creek fault is part of the San Andreas system. It has a long-term slip rate of just under 1,” said Lucy Jones, the California seismologist who wrote The Big One on Twitter. cm/year which puts it in the same category as Hayward, Garlock or San Jacinto.”

There were no initial reports of damage or injuries caused by the quake.
