10 Things WWE Fans Should Know About The Natural Disaster Tag Team

The early ’90s marked the WWE’s formation of a literally huge tag team when John Tinta (aka Earthquake) and Fred Ottman (aka Tugboat and later Typhoon) got together in the name of Natural Disasters. Initially directed by Jimmy Hart’s “Mouth of the South,” Natural Disasters seemed to be a dominant heel-beast force in the tag team division.

However, the Natural Disasters proved to be a fairly successful tag team, capturing two tag team titles before breaking up. They ran together for a few years, but there’s a decent amount to be covered in that time, so let’s dive into what fans should know about this awesome tag team.

Oddly enough, the origins of the natural disaster stem from another monster heel tag team that never came to fruition. In mid-1991, manager Jimmy Hart claimed he had acquired Andre the Giant as a client so he could team up with Earthquake. When The Giant vehemently denied it, Hart inflicted the earthquake on Andre as retaliation, injuring Andre by escorting the Bush Hunters into the ring for a match at the 1991 SummerSlam against Earthquake and another senior partner, Hurricane. Earthquake and Typhoon ended up crushing the bush hunters with ease, albeit with little effort.

Before joining a team, Typhoon was an opponent of some sort for Quake. The year before, Earthquake had set his sights on Hulk Hogan, who was backed by Hogan’s best friend that season, a giant sailor named Tugboat. Shortly before the feud between Jimmy Hart and Andre the Giant, Tugboat began to grow more and more, which would pay off on an episode of Superstars, where Tugboat was managing the Bushwhackers in a six-man tag team match against the Earthquake and Nasty Boys. With his heels rolling, Tugboat will reinvent himself as a Typhoon, taking on a new look and a new attitude.

8 Feud with the Legion of Death

In a 1991 SummerSlam post-match match at Natural Disasters, Earthquake and Typhoon turn their attention to Andre the Giant, but a post-match attack is thwarted by another animal and Hawk tag team, The Legion of Doom. This, of course, led to a feud between LOD and Natural Disasters, which gained a higher profile once Animal and Hawk won the World Tag Team Championship.

After facing off in a Survivor Series elimination match in 1991, Earthquake and Typhoon earned a TV spot at LOD’s tag title at the Royal Rumble in January 1992. The Natural Disasters would emerge victorious in the match, albeit by sorting, so Legion of Doom retained with belts.

7 Face Upside Down Because Jimmy Hart Betrayed

The Natural Disasters couldn’t beat Legion of Doom for tag team belts, but Jimmy Hart’s other client, Money Inc. – Ted DiBiase and Irwin R. Schyster – They managed to get rid of LOD at a home show in early February of 1992. The short-lived Japanese promotion Super World of Sports had a working relationship with WWE which led to several WWE Superstars appearing in the company, including Natural Disasters. In mid-April 1992, Typhoon and Earthquake defeated George and Shunji Takano to capture the SWS Tag Team Title only to drop the belts the day after King Haku and Yoshiaki Yatsu.

The 1991 Survivor Series match mentioned above was the random main event on the show, with Earthquake and Typhoon teaming up with Irwin R. Schyster against Big Boss Man and Legion of Doom. But the following year, the Natural Disasters and the IRS will be on opposite sides of the ring as Earthquake and Typhoon battle their last televised match together.

At the 1992 Survivor Series, the Nasty Boys and the Natural Disasters battled Money Inc. and the Beverly Brothers, with the former taking the win. From there, natural disasters will disappear from television, appear in home shows against the Headshrinkers and lose every match.

The Natural Disasters’ final together would be another home show loss to the Headshrinkers in mid-December of 1992, but that wouldn’t be the end of their interactions. At the 1993 Royal Rumble, an earthquake attacked Typhoon as soon as the former entered the Rumble, eliminating the tag team partner while Earthquake himself was later eliminated by Yokozuna. This was supposed to start with a huge break-up angle between the two, but it never came to fruition as Earthquake left WWE days later.

2 Hurricane became a shock maker

After leaving WWE in the summer of 1993, Typhoon worked his way up to a WCW competitor where he was the focus of one of the most blunders in wrestling history. In Clash of the Champions 24, he was introduced as Shockmaster, Sting’s teammate for the upcoming War Games match, but something went wrong. The Shockmaster was supposed to explode through the wall when the fireworks went off, but he stumbled his way, spilled on the ground and lost his helmet in smoke.

1 Crossed Paths again at WrestleMania 17

In April of 2000, Earthquake and Typhoon teamed up for the Indy Future of Wrestling in South Florida, but they would interact in a high-profile match about a year later. WrestleMania 17’s Gimmick Battle Royal featured a number of old school wrestlers who quickly emerged in nostalgia, including members of the Natural Disasters. In this case, Typhoon wrestles with the role of Tugboat, but he still battles Earthquake, as Earthquake once again wipes out his former partner.
