Strong earthquake strikes Taiwan, triggers tsunami warning for Japan

A strong 6.9-magnitude earthquake rocked Taiwan on Sunday, sending vehicles off course and warning of a tsunami in southern Japan.

The US Geological Survey measured the earthquake’s magnitude at 7.2 before lowering it to 6.9 and said the tsunami risk was over.

The Taiwan Meteorological Bureau said the quake, which occurred near the city of Taitung on the southeast coast, registered 6.8 and had a relatively shallow depth of 4 miles.

The island has felt a series of aftershocks, including in Taipei, which is more than 200 miles away. More than 100 tremors have been recorded in the past 24 hours, according to the Taiwan Meteorological Bureau.

Taiwan media near the epicenter showed the collapse of a low-rise building housing a store, according to pictures from the scene. Taiwan media reported that rescue operations were underway.

Taiwan railway authorities said three carriages derailed in neighboring Hualien County after a platform canopy collapsed. She added that twenty people on board the plane were evacuated.

The quake was felt in the surrounding area, with Japan initially issuing a tsunami warning near Okinawa Prefecture. The Japan Meteorological Agency has raised all tsunami warnings for the country until Sunday evening local time.

The city observatory said the earthquake was also detected in Hong Kong.

A 6.4-magnitude earthquake rocked the city of Taitung on Saturday.

Taiwan lies near the intersection of two tectonic plates and is prone to earthquakes. More than 100 people were killed in the 2016 southern Taiwan earthquake, while a 7.3-magnitude earthquake killed more than 2,000 people in 1999.
