A train derailed and a building collapsed in a 6.8-magnitude earthquake

A strong earthquake hit Taiwan this morning, sending railcars derailed and causing a convenience store to collapse.

Taiwan authorities reported that the 6.8-magnitude earthquake occurred at a relatively shallow depth of seven miles near the city of Taitung on the southeast coast.

A two-story apartment building near the epicenter has collapsed, according to a Taiwanese media report.

The shaking was felt at the northern tip of the island in the capital, Taipei.

Taiwan media said a low-rise building housing the store collapsed in Yuli, and rescue work began liberating four people inside, while a car was suspected of being thrown over a bridge that overturned.

Three train cars derailed at Dongli Station in eastern Taiwan after part of the platform’s canopy collapsed, and nearly 20 passengers on board were evacuated and unharmed.

The US Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a warning to Taiwan after the earthquake but later canceled the warning.

The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a one-meter tsunami warning for part of Okinawa Prefecture following the earthquake.

The Bureau of Meteorology said the quake could be felt across Taiwan. Buildings shook briefly in the capital, Taipei.

Science parks in the southern cities of Tainan and Kaohsiung, home to major semiconductor factories, said there was no impact on operations.

Taiwan lies near the intersection of two tectonic plates and is prone to earthquakes. More than 100 people were killed in an earthquake in southern Taiwan in 2016, while a 7.3-magnitude earthquake killed more than 2,000 people in 1999.

In the wake of the earthquake in Taiwan, the Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning of up to one meter in height to reach several islands in southern Japan.

The agency said early waves could reach Yonaguni Island, a westernmost island in Japan 70 miles east of Taiwan, around 4.10pm local time (8.10am in the UK) and then three nearby islands.

The islands are located about 1,200 miles southwest of Tokyo.

Weather officials urged residents in those areas to stay away from the coast.

Taiwan’s Taitung county was hit by a 6.4-magnitude earthquake Saturday night and it has felt several aftershocks since then.
