A strong earthquake hit Taiwan, collapsed a three-story building, stranded about 400 tourists on a mountainside, and derailed part of a commuter train.

The footage shows the moment when a 6.8-magnitude earthquake caused the roof of a sports center to collapse while people were playing badminton.

People were seen running to safety as parts of the roof were shattered on the badminton court at the Taoyuan Bid Civic Sports Center in the northwest of the country.

The quake was the largest among dozens of earthquakes to rock the island since Saturday evening, when a 6.4-magnitude quake struck.

Most of the damage appeared to have occurred north of the epicenter on the southeast coast of the island, which the Taiwan Meteorological Bureau said occurred in the town of Qichang at a relatively shallow depth of seven kilometers (four miles).

The island’s central news agency said the three-story building, which contained a 7-Eleven store on the ground floor and apartment buildings on the top floor, collapsed in Yuli Town of the eastern Huadong Valley.

The 70-year-old owner and his wife were rescued first, but it took longer to reach the 39-year-old woman and her five-year-old daughter.

A photo released by the city government of Hualien showed the girl lying on a blanket and rescue workers in orange uniforms handed her a metal ladder from the top of the wreckage.

Pictures showed the two upper floors running across a narrow street and on the other side, with electrical wires drawn from the collapsed building.

Meanwhile, police and firefighters rushed a bridge collapse on a two-lane road in what appears to be a rural part of Yuli where three people and one or more cars may have fallen, according to media reports.

A landslide has trapped nearly 400 tourists on a mountain in Yuli famous for its orange daylilies that cover its slopes at this time of year, the Central News Agency said.

They had no electricity and a weak mobile signal.

Quoting the railway administration, the agency said a parachute on a platform at Dongli Station in Fuli Town, between Yuli and the earthquake epicenter in Qichang, hit a train, causing three of the cars to tilt at an angle.

The shaking was felt at the northern tip of the island in the capital, Taipei.

In Taoyuan City, west of Taipei and 210 kilometers (130 miles) north of the epicenter, a man was injured when a roof collapsed on the fifth floor of a sports center.

The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning for several southern Japanese islands near Taiwan, but later raised them.
