Watch: An earthquake in Taiwan causes a train to tremble

Taiwan has been experiencing earthquakes since Saturday, with the epicenter in Taitung on the southeast coast. A 6.4-magnitude earthquake hit the island nation on Saturday, followed by a 6.8-magnitude earthquake with a depth of 7 km on Sunday.

Taiwan’s meteorological office says the quake can be felt across the country, causing train carriages to derail and a convenience store to collapse. Reports of buildings shaking were also recorded in the Taiwanese capital, Taipei.

A video shared on Twitter shows a train trembling and moving sideways during the earthquake.

Another video shows what appears to be a bridge under construction shaking violently during the earthquake.

Because of its location at the meeting point of two tectonic plates, Taiwan is prone to earthquakes. In 2016, an earthquake in southern Taiwan claimed more than 100 lives, while a 7.3-magnitude earthquake in 1999 claimed more than 2,000 lives.
