Earthquake hits Taiwan, triggers tsunami warning for Japan

Taiwan was hit by a massive 6.9-magnitude earthquake on Sunday that caused damage for hundreds of miles and led to a tsunami warning for southern Japan.

NBC News reported that the USGS initially measured the quake with a greater strength, but it was lowered and the tsunami risk exceeded. The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a similar warning for several Japanese islands near Taiwan, but later lifted the warning.

The epicenter was in Qichang Township in Hualien County, where earthquakes and aftershocks continued, creating a ripple effect for more than 200 miles.

The earthquake destroyed an apartment building and trapped four people inside, although they were eventually rescued. It also stranded about 400 tourists on a mountainside and derailed a passenger train.

So far, Taiwan’s emergency operations center has reported one death and nine injuries, according to CNN.

CNN also reported via Twitter that the ongoing earthquakes and aftershocks have occurred within 24 hours since the first earthquake.

“Taiwan has experienced more than 50 earthquakes in the past 24 hours since the 6.4-magnitude earthquake hit Hualien County on Saturday and a stronger 6.9 earthquake on Sunday,” reporter Will Ripley said in a tweet.

“Two of those small earthquakes hit during my live report from Taipei now…and three more since then,” she tweeted.

The Associated Press reported that most of the damage occurred north of the epicenter in the town of Yuli.

Now, it is reported that more than 7,000 families in Yuli are without electricity, and water pipes were damaged in the earthquake. A bridge on a two-lane road collapsed, and local media reported that three people and possibly one vehicle had fallen, according to the Associated Press.

Between Yuli and the epicenter in Qichang, a wreck collided with a train and six cars derailed, although none of the passengers were injured.

Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen activated the Central Emergency Operations Center to deal with the aftermath of the earthquake, and deployed 110 soldiers to help with disaster relief efforts. A local government spokesperson shared the news.

CNN reported that residents were asked to remain alert for possible aftershocks.
