The epicenter of the initial 7.6-magnitude earthquake was near La Placita de Morelos, about 300 miles northwest of Acapulco on Mexico’s relatively sparsely populated central west coast, according to the US Geological Survey.
People as far away as Mexico City, which is more than 300 miles from the epicenter, reported mild shaking.
Originally, the USGS recorded the earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5 on the Richter scale off the coast in the Pacific Ocean. However, the USGS has since updated its alert and upgraded the initial size to 7.6 as well.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a warning for Mexico near the Michoacan coast after the earthquake.

According to the Tsunami Warning Center, waves up to three meters are possible.
Communities like Manzanillo and Acapulco, along with Puerto Vallarta, may experience tsunami waves. A little further up the coast, officials say the Pacific coasts of Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama and Peru could also see tsunami waves of less than 0.3 metres.
Notably, Monday’s quake marked the fifth anniversary of the 2017 earthquake that killed 216 people in Mexico City.
