At least one dead from strong Mexico earthquake

A powerful earthquake struck western Mexico on Monday in memory of two devastating earthquakes, killing at least one person, damaging buildings, cutting power and sending Mexico City residents into the streets for safety.

President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said in a video address that a person died in the nearby Pacific port of Manzanillo after a wall collapsed in a store. Authorities also reported damage to two hospitals in the western state of Michoacan near the epicenter.

Just after 1 p.m. (2 p.m. EDT), the 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck near the coast in the border region of Michoacan and the neighboring state of Colima, the USGS said. The earthquake was relatively shallow, at a depth of only 9 miles, which amplified the shaking.

The US Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has issued a tsunami warning for parts of the coast of Mexico, saying that waves as high as one to three meters (3 to 9 feet) above tide level are possible.

Claudia Sheinbaum, Mayor of Mexico City, said there were no immediate reports of major damage in the capital after the quakes swept through Mexico on the same day that major quakes hit the country in 1985 and 2017.

In an earlier message before the death was announced in Manzanillo, Lopez Obrador said there were no initial reports of deaths, but that there were material damage in areas close to the epicenter. Pictures posted on social media showed severely damaged buildings.

Mexican authorities said the seismic warning was issued about two minutes before the quake struck, allowing residents time to evacuate their homes.

However, some people in the capital struggled to believe it was a real earthquake as the government had already sounded the alarm earlier in the day as an exercise to commemorate past earthquakes that swept Mexico on the same September.

The 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck near the coast in the border region of Michoacan and the neighboring state of Colima.

And in Colcumen, Michoacan – near the epicenter – images seen by Reuters showed shingles flying off of houses and building walls cracked by the force of the quake. In one of the stores, the goods were scattered on the floor.

Power was cut off in parts of the central Rome region, 400 kilometers (250 miles) from the epicenter.

Residents stood cuddling pets on the street, while tourists visiting a local market with a local guide were visibly confused and upset. Traffic lights have stopped working, people are holding on to their phones, sending text messages or waiting for calls.

Thousands were killed in the September 19, 1985 earthquake, and more than 350 were killed in the September 19, 2017 earthquake.
