4.4 earthquake shakes St. George, Littlefield, Mesquite – St. George News

Street. Residents of southwestern Utah Monday afternoon felt an earthquake 30 miles east and southeast of Littlefield, Arizona.

George’s area experienced what some said on social media felt was a “rolling tremor” around 3:18 p.m. Some reported the quake only lasted a second or two while others said it lasted for up to 10 seconds or more.

“I felt this earthquake between 3:10 and 3:20. It had a very short duration (less than 30 seconds), area resident Laura Randall commented on the St. George News Facebook page.” But it was noticeable, and it made our cat and our dog who They were sleeping and waking up a little worried.”

According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake occurred at 3:18 pm and measured 4.4 on the Richter scale. It happened on the Chevwitz Plateau in Arizona, 31 miles south of St. George. The US Geological Survey said the quake occurred at a depth of 6.2 miles, making it a shallow shaker.

The USGS says the 4.4 quake can be felt, but will only cause minor damage.

By the time residents felt the quake in the St. George area, a map on the USGS website shows that the magnitude felt by residents had dropped to about 2.5.

Shortly after the earthquake, St. George News called the St. George Police Department and was told that no one was called to dispatch in case of an emergency or serious property damage related to the event.

By 5:20 p.m., nearly 360 people reported feeling the quake to the USGS “Did you feel it?” section of its website. Most of the reports came from the St. George metro area, as well as Mesquite, Kanab, and Cedar City.

The largest locally perceptible earthquake in recent years was 30 years ago when a 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck the St. George region on September 2, 1992.
