Ulrich Heck survived from floods, fires, earthquakes and theft. Now Covid has dealt with his further blow.

But the small meat seller is confident he will rebound from the deserted business merger, as he has done from every other setback.

“Life is too short to be unhappy – I’m still here, that’s the main thing.”

Google’s quick search results will make you think that the third-generation butcher was the small commodity equivalent to the clerical character Job – a good family man trapped in multiple disasters that kill everything he carries.

The Heik family’s legacy began in Germany in the 1850s as a supplement and restaurant in the southern town of Dietsheim.

As his two brothers left the family business, Heck decided to follow his ancestral traditions in the ideal traditional sausage recipes.

“That’s what they’ve been doing for hundreds of years – why is this? Because it works.

“In Germany, we put sausage in a pie, not a pie in sausage.”

When he arrived in New Zealand from his native Germany in 2004, Heck and his wife Petra moved to Nelson in 2011 after his buildings in Christchurch were damaged in the February earthquake.

His quest for a fresh start wasn’t easy.

A major fire destroyed his factory in the Waikato Industrial Estate in Nelson in May 2014, just one year after being damaged in a flood.

“The earthquake was bad, then the flood came, but the fire … We cannot top it off. Only the nuclear bomb will be more destructive,” Heck said at the time.

The megaton explosion was averted, but in December 2014, the theft of about 1,000 kilograms of meat worth $ 27,000 brought more disaster.

“Put a red poster on the building and tell you that you can’t reach it, or see it burning or coming one morning to find a meter and a half of mud and water passed through your factory … They were all very ruined.”

It is really more than most business owners of a lifetime must bear.

Then came the year 2020.

The planned merger with a South Island-based organization was ready to go in April, taking his products to a wider market and allowing Heik to focus on what he does best – producing premium quality meat products.

The money was pumped into changing its brand, and although one employee became redundant in the process, 18 months of preparation seemed ready to pay dividends.

The Heck Collection includes Permi sticks, salami, sausages and liver dough – with about 1,200 kg of meat products produced each week.

“Two weeks later, they called me to say they couldn’t continue working and they pulled the plug,” Heck said.

So I said, “What do we do now?” “So now we are renaming everything to the heck again.”

Maintaining his current relationship with a family-owned farm in Wairarapa who provide him with meat from pure Scottish cattle Aberdeen Angus, Heck now focused on the direct farm approach to bring in more people through the doors of the Kotua Pl Factory Store.

In his own words, he now feels almost “bulletproof” as he faces the rebuilding of his sixth business within nine years.

After canceling the planned merger during Covid-19’s closure, Ulrich Heck started business from scratch for the sixth time in the past nine years.

“Anything I put my heart and soul back on the right track – quality will never let you down – no matter what time it is, people need soul food.

In addition to his own positive outlook, Heck is credited with supporting his wife Petra in helping him in difficult times.
