A 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck Mexico on the same date as two devastating earthquakes in 1985 and 2017, in what scientists describe as pure coincidence.

At least two people were killed after the earthquake struck just after 1 p.m. local time on Monday, Sept. 19, in the west of the country.

It damaged buildings, cut off electricity and sent residents of the capital, Mexico City, outside to seek safety.

The epicenter was in a sparsely populated area of ​​Mexico, about 90 kilometers (56 miles) from Tecuman in Colima, near the Pacific coast and about 400 kilometers (250 miles) from Mexico City.

It was relatively shallow – only 15 kilometers (nine miles) deep – which would have amplified its impact.

Laura Velasquez, head of Mexico’s Civil Protection Agency, said the two deaths were due to partial collapse of buildings.

One of the victims was crushed in front of a department store front in Manzanillo and the other was found dead inside a shopping mall in the same port city, Colima state.

Ten others were wounded – nine in Colima and one in neighboring Michoacan.

At least 692 aftershocks have been recorded since the quake struck, the strongest of which was 5.8 on the Richter scale on Tuesday morning.

Scientists said that the three earthquakes that struck on the same date are “coincidence”.

“There is no physical cause or statistical bias toward earthquakes in any particular month in Mexico,” said USGS seismologist Paul Earle.

“The plates break when it’s time to break them. What will they know about the calendar?” said seismologist Xyoli Perez-Campos.

However, other people believe that history is more than a coincidence.

“It sounds like a curse,” said Isa Montes, 34, a graphic designer.

“It’s really weird, but a lot of people don’t really like it today,” said Jorge Ornelas, call center coordinator.

He said many people he knows are starting to worry about the earthquake when September comes.

The 35-year-old added: “If we keep thinking that every September 19th is going to shake, it will keep happening every year, because what you think is always going to happen.”

In 1985, an earthquake measuring 8 on the Richter scale struck Mexico City, killing 9,500 people in the center, south, and west of the country.

Hundreds of buildings have collapsed and the event is said to have caused at least $3 billion (£2.6 billion) in damage.

In 2017, a 7.1-magnitude earthquake killed more than 350 people in the central Mexican city of Puebla, which also saw more than 40 buildings collapse.
