Mexico earthquake – latest: Colima volcano threat exposed as country recedes from aftershocks of Michoacan earthquake

A deadly earthquake strikes the Pacific coast of Mexico

An earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale hit the Michoacan region of Mexico on Tuesday, a day after another strong earthquake killed two people.

Monday’s earthquake, with a magnitude of 7.6, struck in memory of two previous earthquakes that caused extensive damage and killed hundreds or thousands of people in 1985 and 2017.

One victim died after being crushed by a department store front in the Pacific port of Manzanillo, while another was found dead in a mall.

The earthquake passed below that level of tragedy, despite the intense nerves from the annual nationwide seismic drill that took place less than an hour ago.

The tsunami warning, which was issued immediately after the earthquake, was revised later today.

The authorities said the tsunami threat was “largely over,” with slight sea fluctuations of up to 0.3 meters above and below normal tide to persist over the next few hours.

Vibrations and destruction appear in videos after a 7.6-magnitude earthquake hits Mexico

Tourists and locals captured a video of the 7.6-magnitude earthquake that hit the central coast of Mexico, sharing scenes of noisy rooms and even swaying pickup trucks.

A 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck the central coast of Mexico on Monday, just half an hour after the country finished its annual earthquake maneuvers. Major earthquakes that killed hundreds and thousands struck on the same date in 2017 and 1985, respectively.

On Twitter, a user named John posted a video from a hotel room in Puerto Vallarta, about 400 kilometers north of the epicenter.

The clip shows his room shaking and a fan swinging violently from the ceiling.

“The earthquake hit the coast of Mexico and our room at the Puerto Vallarta hotel shook badly,” he wrote on Twitter alongside the video.

The coincidence of the Mexico earthquake is worrying many

When the children’s parents were killed when a school collapsed during the 2017 Mexico earthquake and they celebrated mass in their memory, the earth began to shake again.

“No, not again! Oh, my God, not again!” they shouted as a 7.6-magnitude earthquake shook the capital Monday, killing two people in the Pacific state of Colima.

Three powerful earthquakes struck Mexico on September 19 – in 1985, 2017 and now in 2022. An unlucky coincidence has heightened anxiety for many. The last two earthquakes also came very soon after the annual exercises held every September 19 to commemorate the devastating 1985 earthquake.

Mexico’s national civil defense coordinator, Laura Velasquez, said Tuesday that the two deaths in Colima were due to collapsed parts of buildings. Ten people were wounded – nine in Colima and one in neighboring Michoacan.

She added that more than 200 buildings were damaged, including dozens of schools and health centers. Most of the damage occurred in the Pacific countries, near the epicenter of Michoacan. She said about 20 buildings in Mexico City were damaged, but it was minor.

1663721402 “The plates break when it’s time to break”: a seismologist refutes the theory of correlated earthquakes

Seismologist Xyoli Pérez-Campos at the Geophysical Institute of Mexico’s National Autonomous University told the Associated Press that there is no physical cause for major earthquakes on the same date.

He added that Monday’s earthquake was driven by “the interaction of the Cocos plate with the North American plate,” similar to the 1985 earthquake.

The territory of Mexico extends across parts of five plates.

“The plates break when it’s time to break,” the researcher said. “What will they know about the calendar?”

Earthquakes on the same date lead to increased anxiety

The coincidence of three earthquakes occurring on the same date has made many anxious.

“It’s really weird, but a lot of people don’t really like that today,” call center coordinator Jorge Ornelas told The Associated Press.

He said many were starting to worry about the earthquake by September.

Ornelas, 35, added, “If we keep thinking it’s going to shake every September 19, it’s going to keep happening every year, because what you think is always happening.”

Deaths on Monday as a result of partial collapse of buildings

According to Laura Velasquez, Mexico’s national civil defense coordinator, the two deaths on Monday were caused by partial collapse of buildings. Ten people were wounded, including nine in Colima state and one in Michoacan state.

Ms. Velasquez said on Tuesday that dozens of schools and health clinics had been damaged. In total, more than 200 buildings were damaged. Most of this damage occurred in Colima and Michoacan, with about 20 buildings slightly damaged in Mexico City.
