Mexico earthquake: A 6.8-magnitude aftershock hits Michoacan, the second strong earthquake to hit the region this week

MEXICO CITY (CABC) – A 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck the Mexican state of Michoacan early Thursday, the second strong earthquake to hit the region this week.

The quake occurred shortly after 1 a.m., just three days after a 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck western and central Mexico, killing two people.

Thursday’s quake, like Monday’s, had its epicenter in the western state of Michoacan near the Pacific coast, the US Geological Survey said. The epicenter was about 29 miles southwest of Aguila, Michoacan, at a depth of about 15 miles.

The USGS initially estimated Thursday’s quake to be 7.0, but later lowered it to 6.8.

Monday’s strongest earthquake was the third major earthquake to hit on September 19 – in 1985, 2017 and now in 2022. The two earthquakes in 2017 and 2022 came very soon after the annual earthquake drills held every September 19 to commemorate the devastating 1985 year. The earthquake that killed about 9,500 people.
