Second strong earthquake hit Mexico City this week

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) – A 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck western Mexico early Thursday, killing a Mexico City woman who fell and hit her head as residents left their homes during the country’s second major earthquake this week.

The Mexico City government said the woman stumbled on the stairs of her home in the downtown Doctors neighborhood as earthquake alarms went off and buildings began shaking.

The city also reported that a man in the south of the capital suffered a fatal heart attack after the quake.

Authorities in other parts of the country said there were no immediate reports of serious damage.

The quake, which first measured a magnitude of 7.0 by the United States Geological Survey (USGS), was weaker and deeper than Monday’s quake, striking at a depth of 20.7 kilometers (12.9 miles).

In Mexico City’s Roma Sur neighborhood, terrified residents ran outdoors in nightwear and pajamas, some only wrapped in blankets. Neighbors reassured each other, carrying children and crying pets, as the alarm rang out four times.

The epicenter of Thursday’s quake, which occurred around 1.16 a.m. local time (0616 GMT), occurred in Michoacan state, close to Monday’s quake.

Mexican civil protection authorities and President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said there were no initial reports of damage in Michoacan or its surrounding areas.

The US Tsunami Warning System said the recent earthquake did not pose a tsunami threat. After Monday’s earthquake, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami warning.

The 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck Monday on the anniversary of the deadly earthquakes of 1985 and 2017, killing two people in the Pacific port of Manzanillo. Read more
