One person died after a 6.8-magnitude earthquake hits Mexico earthquake news

A woman died in a central Mexico City neighborhood when she fell down the stairs of her home during the tremor.

A powerful earthquake with an initial magnitude of 6.8 struck Mexico, causing buildings to sway and killing at least one person in the capital.

The quake struck early Thursday morning, just after 1 a.m. (0600 GMT), just three days after a 7.6-magnitude quake struck western and central Mexico, killing two people.

Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum said a woman died in a downtown neighborhood when she fell from the stairs of her home. People gathered in the streets as earthquake alarms sounded.

Thursday’s quake, like Monday’s, had its epicenter in the western state of Michoacan near the Pacific coast, the US Geological Survey said. The epicenter was 46 kilometers (29 miles) southwest of Aguila, Michoacan, at a depth of 24 kilometers (15 miles).

The Michoacan state government said the quake was felt throughout the state. It reported damage to a building in Uruapan and landslides on the highway linking Michoacan and Guerrero to the coast.

President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said via Twitter that Monday’s earthquake was a follow-up and was also felt in the states of Colima, Jalisco and Guerrero.

The earthquakes have shaken an already tense country. A devastating earthquake in 1985 killed about 9,500 people in Mexico.
