Magnitude 6.8 earthquake strikes Mexico, killing one

A 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck southwestern Mexico early Thursday morning, killing at least one person, days after another deadly earthquake struck.

Like the strongest earthquake on Monday, the epicenter was in Michoacan state. It was discovered at about 1:16 a.m. (2:16 a.m. ET) at a depth of 12.4 miles, according to the US Geological Survey.

Officials in the capital, Mexico City, confirmed the death of a woman in a fall in her home in the Doctors district of Cologne. And Reuters reported that residents felt earthquakes in the city, which led to the sounding of alarms and prompted many to evacuate their homes.

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said in a video posted on Twitter that the quake was a follow-up and was felt in Michoacan, Colima, Jalisco, Guerrero and Mexico City. He said there were no reports of damage so far.

The quake comes on the heels of the 7.6-magnitude quake that hit Mexico on Monday, the anniversary of two other major earthquakes.

An earthquake on September 19, 1985 killed thousands, while another earthquake on the same date in 2017 killed more than 350 people.

Monday’s earthquake destroyed several buildings in Mexico City, causing power outages in parts of the capital and killing at least two people.
