Mexico earthquake triggers ‘desert tsunami’ in Death Valley

About five minutes after the 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck near the southwest coast of Mexico on Monday, calm waters deep in the cavern of Death Valley National Park began creeping into the surrounding limestone rocks.

Devils Hole is home to the endangered Pupfish, a unique breed that can face short-term challenges after a geological phenomenon, technically called the sesh. The waves in the cave stir up sediments and scatter algae that grows on the shallow shelf, which the pupfish depend on to feed, and they can also break down some of the pup eggs, Wilson said.

But in the long term, he said, movement from earthquakes helps remove buildup of organic matter, which over time can suck oxygen from the unique ecosystem.

“This kind of resets the system,” Wilson said. On Monday, he said, the waves lasted about 30 minutes before calming down.

Wilson said it’s rare for mature pups to die in these events, but he said park rangers will continue to provide supplemental meals for the fish, which has seen a growth in numbers in recent years. In March, officials recorded 175 Devils Hole fish – up from 35 about a decade ago – and Wilson said the number of falls is planned for this weekend.

Wilson said the cave’s geothermal pool, which stays at about 93 degrees year-round, along with low oxygen levels, makes Devils Hole a “harsh” environment, not to mention the rare but frequent aftershocks.

“The little fish has survived many of these events in recent years,” Wilson said. “We didn’t find any dead fish after the waves stopped.”

The last “desert tsunami” was recorded in July 2019, when waves rose to 15 feet, according to National Park Service officials, after a 7.1-magnitude earthquake near Ridgecrest.
