Devils’ Pit in Death Valley hit by earthquake 1,500 miles away – Pasadena Star News

In what Death Valley naturalists describe as a “sudden freak of geology,” a 7.6-magnitude earthquake in Mexico on Monday sent 4-foot waves into Devils Hole, a water-filled cave in the national park.

The “desert tsunami” – technically, a sich – was recorded in the video above.

The earthquake occurred at 11:05 a.m. Pacific time, with its epicenter off the coast of the Mexican state of Colima. After 22 minutes, water began flowing 1,500 miles into Devils Hole, a press release from the park said. The waves reached a height of 4 feet around 11:35 a.m.

Devils Hole is located in a section of the park in Nye County, Nevada. The limestone cave, hundreds of feet deep, is known for its endangered population of devil fish, which depend on algae that grow on a shallow sunlit shelf.

Monday’s disturbance stirred up sediment on that shelf and separated some algae, which in the short term will reduce food for fish. But Kevin Wilson, an aquatic ecologist with the parks service, said no dead fish were found and added, “Puppy fish have survived many of these events in recent years.”

Nine years ago, there were only 35 fish in Devils Hole. In March, the population was up to 175, and another census is scheduled this weekend, according to the park’s release.

In 2016, three men from Nevada climbed the fence protecting the ecologically fragile cave and went on a drunken party, leaving behind beer cans, shotgun shells, vomit and — and in the water — a pair of underwear.
