Monday’s 7.6-magnitude earthquake in Mexico caused waves in Devils’ Pit in Death Valley National Park

DEATH VALLEY, Nevada – Minutes after a 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck parts of Mexico on Monday, the effects of seismic energy in the United States were seen as what officials described as a “desert tsunami” that formed in the Mojave Desert.

Unlike an ocean tsunami that produces an unfathomable amount of energy and massive waves, this desert feature was confined to a geothermal heat pool known as Devils Hole in Death Valley National Park.

The water-filled cave is prone to seismic waves, and fortunately for the National Park Service staff, they were in the right place at the right time to witness the aftermath of the earthquake.

Park staff immediately grabbed their phones and filmed a video of water splashing on the rocks, similar to the effect of a spill in a bathtub or pool.

NPS staff on Facebook wrote: “NPS staff on site were doing research and saw the ruins firsthand. Within five minutes, the still water in the pond began to slowly move, and soon it was built several feet high.”

Although the epicenter was 1,300 miles away, the flow of water continued for several minutes.

Major earthquakes centered in Japan, Indonesia, and Chile have caused similar scenes that are, for the most part, harmless except for an endangered species of pupfish that calls home a geothermal pool.

The NPS said the water temperature stays around 92 degrees Fahrenheit year-round, allowing the fish to forage and breed on a shallow rocky shelf near the surface.

Despite the sudden waves, there were no initial reports of significant effects on fish.

The NPS said they expect to see more spawning activity over the next few days, leading to a potential population boom.
