Plane diverted after 5.8-magnitude earthquake hits New Zealand

From an unperturbed cat to an airplane being diverted, there were mixed reactions to a 5.8-magnitude earthquake that shook homes across New Zealand Thursday night.

GNS Science said the strike struck at 9.07pm (7.07pm EST), and was centered 30 kilometers northeast of the French Corridor at the top of the South Island, at a depth of 51 kilometers.

More than 44,000 people reported feeling the quake – residents from all over New Zealand, including Christchurch, Motueka, Yarappa, Raglan, New Plymouth, and southern Auckland.

About 44 people in the country rated the tremor as severe, including reports from Auckland and Christchurch.

Wellington man Andrew Chen said his Air New Zealand flight from Auckland to Wellington was unable to land safely shortly after the earthquake.

“The captain said they would have to check the runway for damage before we could land,” Chen said.

After about half an hour flying at Wellington Airport, the plane was forced to land in Christchurch when it ran out of fuel.

Chen said the plane was refueled and departed for Wellington 30 minutes later in Christchurch.

“We could have gotten to Sydney in the time it took to get to Wellington, but I understand they can’t compromise on safety,” Chen said.

Wellington Airport confirmed one flight was affected.

John Robbins in Levine said his home had a “slow, moderate shaking,” while John Emmanuel of Richmond near Nelson described the quake as “one sharp tremor.”

Alison Toke in Waikato said she mistook the “gentle rolling motion” as a dizzy spell and was glad to find out she wasn’t imagining things when she read about the earthquake on Stuff.

Reactions to the earthquake varied. (amour)

David White in Wellington said he was surprised to discover that in another room his wife did not feel what he described as a “sharp slide from east to west”.

“The cat didn’t move either,” White said. “That’s weird to me because this earthquake was so fast and sharp. I can’t believe she didn’t feel that earthquake.”

A resident of Foxton Beach said they felt a “very strong” tremor, which “rolled for a long time.”

Allison Armstrong, of Nelson, said the “long and powerful” earthquake scared her so badly.

“It’s been a while since the Kaikoura earthquake, Sidon [it was] It’s a wake-up call.”

Philippa Smith was at Wellington Hospital recovering from a joint replacement when the earthquake shook her room.

“I couldn’t ‘fall and cover and grab’ hanging on the drops and bags,” she said.

Smith said she felt “shaken” by the event but was confident she was fine and “in a good place in the hospital”.

John Restau, a seismologist at GNS Science, said many factors can influence how an earthquake is felt across the country.

Restau said the quake’s depth of 51 km meant it was likely to be felt on a large scale, but the seismic energy emitted from the epicenter was not equal.

The type of ground and construction style can also affect the degree of vibration a person feels.

After the Melbourne earthquake

“If you were on soft soil, the vibration would be much greater than if you were on a rock foundation,” Restau said. “Homes with wood structures will react much differently to vibration than brick or concrete.”

In 2020, Victoria University of Wellington researchers mapped the bedrock density and sediment under the city of Wellington after the 2016 Kaikoura earthquake that severely damaged some buildings while others appeared to be more stable.

During the study, a master’s student in geophysics, Alistair Stronach, said the sediments above the city’s shale had an effect much like that of a “jelly in a bowl.”

“The 2016 earthquake had particularly bad shaking in Thorndon and around the waterfront, mostly due to the depth of sediment there. The deeper the earthquake, the worse the shaking,” Stronak said.

There were no major aftershocks reported on GeoNet on Friday.
