More than 38 earthquakes in a seismic swarm below the summit of Mauna Loa

An estimated 38 small earthquakes have occurred under the summit of Mauna Loa since 2 a.m. on Friday, September 23, 2022. The US Geological Survey’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reports that the quakes are part of a small seismic swarm below the summit of the caldera.

Most earthquakes as of 10:30 a.m. occurred in a group about 3.1 miles wide and 1.2 to 0.6 miles below the surface. The range was up to 2.7.

HVO reports that these earthquakes may result from changes in the magma storage system and/or may be part of the volcano’s normal reset processes due to the changing pressures within it.

“Seismic activity under Mauna Loa has been gradually increasing over the past two months,” according to responsible HVO scientist Ken Hoon. Small earthquake swarms are a normal part of this increase in activity. There are currently no indications that magma is moving towards the surface and that other monitoring systems display normal behaviour. Levels of seismic activity and deformation remain lower than those recorded during the winter of 2021. HVO will continue to closely monitor this activity and report any significant changes.”
