Co-Pa event in Pasco raises funds for disaster relief after earthquake

Four government officials remained in Pasco’s sister city Colima to deal with disaster relief after the deadly earthquake. They planned to sign a friendship agreement.

Pasco, Washington – The Co-Pa Friendship and Cooperation Association is holding a Sunset Symphony on Saturday. Two of the concert’s performers arrived early, standing next to Colima delegates back in Mexico, where they helped after a 7.6-magnitude earthquake shook the city earlier this week killing at least two people.

The concert was originally meant to celebrate the union between Pasco and her sister city Colima, but it has now become more meaningful.

Mike Gonzalez, Pasco’s director of economic development, said he believes between 30-40% of Pasco’s Latin population has connections to Colima.

The four delegates from Colima postponed their visit to Washington State to work on disaster relief, and put the task of representing the city in two of the artists who presented on Saturday.

Miguel Angel Alatori, a composer from Colima, said he was very grateful for the level of trust the state had placed in him to do this work.

The event is now a fundraiser to help those affected by the deadly earthquake. This includes the two actors who have family in town. It was said that there were many families who lost their homes, and the damage to the buildings was severe, Alaturi said.

Jose Inegues, producer and performer, also has a family in Colima. He said he had been in contact with his mother.

“I can’t collapse because I have to project my voice. The projection is important. So it’s going to be hard to navigate the feelings and emotions of what’s going on right now,” Iniguez said.

Despite the tragedy, the event continued to be a learning opportunity.

Inegiz said there are some artists who have expressed concern that the composer only speaks Spanish. “What’s cool, is that turned into a learning opportunity because they were really able to get the instructions and realize that only music is truly universal and universal, no matter what language you speak,” said Inegiz.
