Kumanovo, Yugoslavia, July 1963: In the tent town of Kumanovo, Major Rosa Ramirez feeds the 3-year-old survivor of the July 26 earthquake that killed more than 1,000 people and destroyed most of the city of Skopje. The fate of the girl’s parents is still unknown. The tent city was set up by the Eighth Evacuation Hospital in Landstuhl, Germany, where 200 doctors, nurses and other staff were taken to Belgrade by Air Division 322 and then transported on trucks and buses over 250 miles of bad roads.
