With only two games left in the MLS regular season, few clubs are trying to secure the last playoff places in both conferences, especially in the West. Saturday’s lone competition sees the LA Galaxy looking to pick up points when it faces its in-state rival at the San Jose Earthquakes.

Los Angeles finds itself in a heated battle in the Western Conference, as it is one of eight clubs battling for the last four positions of the post-season. With a game in hand, Galaxy comes to Saturday with 43 points, and is currently tied for seventh place with Real Salt Lake. After the competition, Los Angeles will only have two games to avoid missing the playoffs for the third year in a row, a sign that has only happened to the foundational franchise once before. They have been fighting over the last weeks, having only lost once in their last eight matches. However, they were only 3-1-4 during that period, despite their victory over the Colorado Rapids last Saturday.

It’s safe to say it’s been another disappointing season in San Jose. The club currently sits last in the West with 31 points, just four points behind DC United, although the Earthquakes recently won, defeating the Vancouver Whitecaps on September 4, and snatched a big win over conference-leading LAFC last month. With their standing as a team heading into another season early, San Jose have a chance to play a spoiler on Saturday at home, racking up six of their seven victories in 2022.

The Earthquakes also have an advantage over the Galaxy, as they went to Carson in July and stole the 3-2 win from Los Angeles.
