No damage detected after the M 6.4 Aceh earthquake: BPBD

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Regional Disaster Reduction Agency (BPBD) has confirmed that there was no damage to buildings or other public facilities in West Aceh region due to the 6.4-magnitude (M) earthquake recorded on Saturday morning.

“Based on the results of our monitoring from Saturday morning until noon, so far, no damages have been found to buildings or public facilities,” Mukhtaruddin, head of West Aceh district BPBD, said on Saturday.

Based on the results of coordination with the military, police, disaster response team and RAPI volunteers in West Aceh province, as well as other relevant parties in each sub-district of the region, there were no reports of damage to residential property, he said.

However, the regional agency is monitoring a number of sites to ensure there is no impact from the disaster.

Mukhtar El-Din said that the economic activity of the community in the area proceeded normally after the earthquake.

He appealed to people to remain calm and beware of possible consequences.

A 6.4m earthquake hit the region at 3.53am West Indonesia Standard Time (WIB) on Saturday.

The epicenter was at 3.75 degrees north latitude and 95.97 degrees east longitude, or 46 kilometers (km), in the sea to the southwest of Meulaboh District, West Aceh District, Aceh Province, at a depth of 53 km. .

The earthquake was caused by subduction activity in the Aceh-Andaman giant plate, said Soko Britno-Ade, deputy geophysics at the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

He said it was a shallow earthquake with a thrust fault mechanism.

The earthquake intensity was estimated to be IV-V on the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale (MMI).

BMKG’s monitoring results indicated two aftershocks as of 8:10 a.m. WIT: the first with a magnitude of 2.6 that occurred at 5 a.m. WIT, and the second of a magnitude of 2.7 at 5:09 a.m. WIT.
