California researchers say slices of redwood may hold clues to past earthquakes

Researchers with the US Geological Survey and the University of California have partnered to use redwood tree trunks to better understand past earthquakes.

The team “collected strips of 23 redwood logs along the northern coastal portion of the San Andreas Fault” near Gualala, California, in August, according to a USGS press release on September 23.

Officials said the researchers will look at logs that were initially felled in the 19th and early 20th centuries. They believe that by analyzing tree rings, they can better understand the effects of earthquakes “before the 7.9-magnitude San Francisco earthquake in 1906”.

The team also plans to collect live samples of redwoods to compare those with “two datasets to look for evidence of … past San Andreas earthquakes,” according to the press release.

The press release included photos of the team’s fieldwork, outlining the tree climbing process, cutting logs and preparing them for analysis.

The team consists of Bill Philippousian, Nick Konetta and Austin Elliott, who are researchers from the USGS Seismology Center, and Alison Carroll, a researcher at Cal Poly Humboldt, according to officials. The team plans to analyze Humboldt’s tree rings.

The San Andreas Fault extends about 750 miles across California. Gualala is located about 160 miles northwest of Sacramento.
