3,300 buildings demolished in Groningen due to earthquake damage

More than 3,300 structures have been demolished in Groningen since 2012, when the region struck the strongest earthquake since gas exploration began, NOS reported Tuesday.

NOS said the buildings demolished were either structurally unsound or unsaleable and most were private homes, citing figures from the government agency set up to deal with the damage.

The National Coordinator was established in Groningen in 2015 to monitor and reinforce homes and other buildings located in the earthquake zone. There are no figures available to show how many properties were demolished prior to the founding of the NCG, according to NOS.

Locals are concerned about the loss of terraces and detached dwellings since the 1920s which is common in the area, particularly in villages near the epicenters.

Cook Peters of the Local Heritage Foundation said so many buildings have been demolished in Lubersum that locals are concerned that “only the Church of Petros and Paulus remains.”

So-called “featured buildings” could be removed if the process of making them safe again would cost more than 150% of demolitions and rebuilding.

In the neighboring village of Overshield, about 80% of the buildings have already been or are to be demolished.

More than 1,000 earthquakes have been measured in the province of Groningen since 1986, with a magnitude of 3.6 on the Richter scale. The earthquakes have been linked to the extraction of natural gas from the Slochteren field discovered in 1959.
