Earthquake hero’s strong will to survive and see his family

Gan Yu, an earthquake hero who stayed at a hydropower station with his colleague and prevented downstream villages from flooding, was found dead last Wednesday, 17 days after a 6.8-magnitude earthquake hit Luoding County in southwest China’s Sichuan Province.

On September 5 when the earthquake hit Luoding City, Gan and Lu Yong, two workers at the Wandong Hydropower Station, chose not to escape, but instead climbed the dam to open two gates to release the surging water, saving the lives of hundreds of villagers.

Lu was rescued on September 8 while a local villager found Gan, Ni Taigao, on September 21. Gann was transferred from the hospital’s intensive care unit to the general ward on the afternoon of September 25 and his mental condition was fine.

While many netizens felt this was a miracle of life, some vigilantes found Gunn to be even thinner after comparing his before and after photos. “He must have suffered a lot,” some commented.

A relative of Gann said he used to weigh 75 kilos but now weighs around 55 kilos.

Looking back on the day of the earthquake, Gan said that when the water level rose, he suggested opening the gates to let the water out, so he and colleague Luo decided to postpone the building’s evacuation.

Gan recalled, “I told Lu Yong that the gates of the dam should be raised to release the water, or else you would rush in too many people, and Lu Yong agreed.”

Gann is very shortsighted. At that time, his glasses were smashed by a flying stone, and he could only see from a distance of 10 meters. So Lu went to open the flood door first. Later, Gan climbed the dam and opened another flood door with Lu.

Having decided to go out to save themselves, they were trapped in the mountain for a long time without access to food. Jean’s leg was hit in an aftershock. Thinking that he would pull his companion, Gan decided to let Luo go first and try to find help.

After Lu left, Gan stayed where he had been for three or four days. Because of the earthquake’s constant aftershocks, he was worried that Luo might have an accident on the road, so he decided to walk in the direction Luo had left. During this time, he overcame many unimaginable difficulties.

Soon, Gan was lost on the mountain. With his blurred vision, he could only eat the wild kiwi fruit on the ground.

“I ate a lot. Some of the kiwis were ripe and some were raw. I had never eaten kiwis before, but now I think they are delicious,” he said.

Drinking water is also a big challenge, Gan said. At first, there was a small stream, but when he climbed the mountain, he could only drink the algae water. When he did not find a source of water, he said to himself, “If you want to live, you can just drink your own urine.”

Gann tried to save himself several times. “I built some ‘nests’ with materials I could find. I also tried to make a fire but failed because I had no tools and it was raining almost all the time. I could lie on the ground and dry my clothes only when the sun went down.”

In the days when Gan was trapped, his concept of time was very vague.

“Sometimes I was tired and fell asleep for a day. It felt like 20 or 30 days had passed,” he said.

He said the hardest time was when his foot was injured. Since he couldn’t walk, he had to stay in place for a day or two.

While searching for Gunn, rescuers found some of his clothes which he said he took off to call for help.

Gann said that during difficult times, what drove him was his longing for his family and survival.

“I thought there must be some people around looking for me, and I needed to let them find me,” he said.

On September 21, Ni, the local villager, followed a voice and found Gan lying in the woods.

“I called for help,” Gan said. “When I heard someone respond, I kept screaming because I knew someone was there. I was so excited when I saw him.”

Looking at this experience, Gan said, “It is not easy to survive. Although I have faced many difficulties, I feel that there is nothing as important as life. We stayed at the hydroelectric power station because we wanted to save the villagers downstream. The river. Later I was saved by the villagers. Thank you all.”

Gann said the most he wants to do is eat a good meal and spend more time with his family after he recovers.

According to the West China Hospital in Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan, Jean is expected to undergo surgery on his left ankle on Wednesday. If his recovery goes well, he will be discharged from the hospital later this week.
