Earthquake Hazards…in Silicon Valley?

Earthquake Hazards…in Silicon Valley?

Good morning, Bay Area. It’s Tuesday, September 27, and the morning fog is back. Here’s what you need to know to start your day.

A new study at Stanford has found that a less-studied fault system along the western side of Silicon Valley can generate a 6.9-magnitude earthquake — about the same size as the infamous Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989 — every 250 to 300 years.

The study adds to an understanding of how much the densely populated Silicon Valley region may face from faults taking place underneath, which is particularly difficult to study using traditional geological methods.

“The important message here is that we talk a lot about the San Andreas Fault and the Hayward Fault as a potential hazard, but we know that there are many other faults below the San Francisco Bay Area that can generate earthquakes,” said Stephen DeLong, a USGS geologist.

“The probability of these moderate earthquakes occurring every few hundred years is consistent with what we previously thought about these faults,” DeLong said.

Today’s forecast

The morning fog is back, and is expected to spread all the way to the San Ramon and Livermore Valleys this morning before evacuation. Parts of the coast and west side of San Francisco may feel like they’re at the height of fog season.

High temperatures range from the mid-60s along the coast to the low 80s in the warmest areas of East Bay. The summit must have been in downtown San Francisco in the upper 60s.

Cars may have disappeared from John F. Kennedy Drive in Golden Gate Park, but some San Francisco icons from the past have taken up residence—three-headed Doggie Diners that once loomed over the Bay Area fast-food chain outlets. long since obsolete.

The 7-foot-tall fiberglass dog heads, each weighing 600 pounds and wearing a chef’s hat and tie, are camped on the car-free stretch of JFK between Conservatory Drive West and Sixth Avenue. Heads of dachshunds with their long noses sit atop square platforms with two Adirondack chairs in the front – sometimes surrounded by curious or bewildered fans who take selfies or touch their noses.

“If you rub one of their noses, you get one week of good luck,” said John Law, a San Franciscan who considers himself a servant of three caricatured dogs.
