The latest in Lake Taupo as earthquakes and land warping continue

Since May, GeoNet has observed land movement or elevation at a rate of 60 ± 20 mm per year at a site on the Hurumatangi Reef in Lake Taupo.

“We interpret the ground elevation and earthquake activity as caused by the movement of magma and hydrothermal fluids within the volcano,” GeoNet said.

Their experts believe that the activity can continue in the lake for the coming weeks or even months at different rates or bowels.

And while some earthquakes can be felt by those near Lake Taupo, GeoNet said the ground deformation is only detected through their monitoring tools.

What do volcanic disturbances mean? GeoNet breaks it down

Volcanic disturbances are when magma or hot water and superheated magma steam make their way through the ground under a volcano, resulting in earthquakes, ground movement, and changes in hydrothermal systems.

There have been 17 episodes of past unrest in Topo over the past 150 years.

Many of these were more severe than we currently observe in Topo. None of these episodes, or the many others that would have occurred over the past 1,800 years before written records were kept, ended with a volcanic eruption.

The last eruption of the Taub volcano was in the year 232 AD ± 10 years. The chance of a volcanic eruption at Taupo is still very low in any one year.

Seizures are common in calderas around the world. Volcanic disturbances at volcanoes such as Taupō can last for months or years and do not lead to a volcanic eruption.

If there are increasing disturbances that have not yet been observed, we will see more substantive impacts on the local area. These can include earthquakes with ground shaking and possible landslides on steep slopes, especially after rain.

Liquification can occur in the event of larger earthquakes. Significantly higher levels of ground deformation, tens of centimeters or meters, would only occur at high levels of disturbance and could have effects such as harming underground services.

Changes in geothermal activity may also occur with stronger and developing disturbances. This can be under the lake or in the stationary geothermal areas of the Taupo region.

GeoNet said the current alert level reflects disturbances and is not a forecast of future volcanic activity.
