In strategic dialogues, the United States and WHO seek to maximize their longstanding partnership
Washington – WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and US Secretary of Health and Human Services Xavier Becerra agreed on Tuesday to develop a 2023 work plan to tackle shared priorities, chief among them the global health security and pandemic preparedness.
“As always, I’m glad to see Dr. Tedros and talk about how we can advance the health of all people around the world,” Secretary Becerra tweeted after the meeting.
During the day of strategic dialogue, which focused on universal health care, primary health care, mental health, equity and the global health workforce, Dr. Tedros also met with US Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy, coordinator of the White House’s response to COVID- 19 Dr. Ashishom K. Jha, US Representative Barbara Lee and US Senator Bob Menendez.
dr. Tedros said he was grateful to Secretary Becerra for “a very productive strategic dialogue on how to strengthen WHO and strengthen global health security, including through pandemic agreements, investments in strengthening health systems and prioritizing primary health care around the world.
dr. Tedros and the surgeon general discussed ways the United States and WHO could work together on mental health and touched on the impact of loneliness on people’s health.
The WHO and the United States issued a joint statement after the meetings.
For many years, the United States was one of the largest donors to the WHO. It was the third largest in 2020-21, investing around USD 700 million. In December 2021, the United States announced a contribution of US$280 million to support critical work to end the COVID-19 pandemic, strengthen public health systems, and provide emergency assistance.
The United States is a long-time supporter of WHO’s fight against polio, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria, while helping to advance global health priorities such as primary care for women and children, food and drug security, and global health security .
The United States maintains a strong presence in WHO Collaborating Centers, contributing expertise in areas such as addressing cancer, occupational health, infectious diseases, nutrition, mental health, chronic diseases, and improving health technologies.
The next strategic dialogues between the United States and the WHO are tentatively planned for the end of 2023.
