Researchers should develop more earthquake engineering innovations

This country is prone to earthquakes.

Yogyakarta (Antara) – Minister of Public Works and Public Housing Basuki Hdimuljono has urged researchers at universities across Indonesia to develop several earthquake engineering innovations to support the construction of earthquake-resistant homes, buildings and infrastructure.

While actually delivering his remarks at the Fifth International Conference on Earthquake Engineering (ICEEDMS) held by the University of Gadja Mada College of Engineering (UGM), Yogyakarta Province, on Wednesday, Hadimulyono emphasized that these innovations are necessary because Indonesia was a country located in a disaster-prone area.

He noted that “this country is prone to earthquakes. The government has prepared designs for earthquake-resistant buildings and infrastructure in accordance with the concept of disaster mitigation.”

The minister pointed out that the design of earthquake-resistant buildings and infrastructure continues to develop, which is considered a necessity for synergy between the government and researchers in various universities.

“I believe that there should be harmony and synergy between earthquake engineering researchers and those working in industry and government to promote earthquake mitigation attempts, both in Indonesia and in other countries,” the minister emphasized.

To mitigate earthquake damage, PUPR has so far implemented earthquake-resistant design on several housing and infrastructure development projects.

In fact, he noted that many dam and bridge development projects in Indonesia have implemented earthquake-resistant constructions.

“(Seismic engineering is applied) starting with designs of bridges, dams and offshore infrastructure. We always evaluate the seismic performance of (infrastructure) and implement earthquake resistant designs to rehabilitate building structures,” he said.

On the same occasion, one of the keynote speakers at the event, Professor Jonathan Bray from the University of California, USA, said that the level of damage to buildings during the earthquake was affected by the hardness of the topsoil material, the condition of hard and soft rocks, as well as the depth of the underlying rocks.
