A series of earthquakes hit West Sumatra

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – On Wednesday, West Sumatra was hit by a series of earthquakes that are known to be centered on the ground. The 4.5-magnitude earthquake was first recorded at 10:46 am Indonesia Western Time (WIB) 12 kilometers northwest of Basaman at a depth of 10 kilometers.

The earthquake’s strength was measured at III on the MMI scale, which is similar to a truck passing.

Tempo.co noted that this is the sixth earthquake to strike land in West Sumatra since September 16, or the ninth in the region in the same time period.

Earthquakes in West Sumatra were previously centered in Bukittinggi (four times) and Pariaman. In a statement issued last Monday, the acting chief of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center, Daryono, said the Bukittinggi earthquake was caused by increased activity of the Sumatra fault in the Cyanok sector.

It is also noted that its activity is increasing in the Tripa segment. This is similar to what caused the two M4.5 and 5.1 earthquakes in Takengon, central Aceh, on Monday and Friday last week.
