Turkish Red Crescent plans to rebuild earthquake-stricken Afghanistan
Afghanistan is still grappling with the aftermath of the earthquake that struck the country in June and displaced many. The Turkish Red Crescent (Kızılay), which provided a lifeline with food aid in the aftermath of the disaster, soon joined the reconstruction effort.
Currently, UN agencies have begun efforts to rebuild Barmal District in Afghanistan’s Paktika Province, which was among the heavily damaged sites. They are also soon planning to move to another hard-hit Jayan district, where the Turkish Red Crescent plans to rebuild 100 homes in two villages.
Maulvi Elias Nasiri, an official from the Afghan Red Crescent, says Ghayan needs about 4,500 homes, Barmal needs 1,500 new homes, and Sabra, another district, needs 500 to 600 new homes. Nasseri says that more than one family inhabits each tent that is sent to the disaster area and about 2,000 winter tents are still needed. “They also need new clothes before winter,” he told Anadolu Agency (AA) on Wednesday. Nasiri thanked Turkey for its “plentiful and timely” assistance in the immediate aftermath of the earthquake. He said they were also able to control the cholera outbreak that occurred after the earthquake.

The Turkish Red Crescent is among the charities helping earthquake victims, along with the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) and the Humanitarian Aid Foundation (IHH). Turkey also sent “good trains” loaded with humanitarian aid.
Construction of new homes is scheduled to start in October and end in March. Farid Ahmed Zia, head of the Turkish Red Crescent delegation in Afghanistan, said they are seeking to speed up work so that people can have a warm shelter in winter. Zia said they will also dig 10 water wells in the area to meet the water needs of the residents.

Din Muhammad Sadeq, 25, who lost seven members of his family in the earthquake, said he lost his home and was living in a tent with the rest of his family, 11 people. “We try to make a living by picking pine nuts from the mountains. We have nothing to endure the winter. We have been told that our homes will be rebuilt, and we are looking forward to it. We hope the international community will help us.”
Aladdin Jianhan, a member of a large family of 25 who survived the disaster, says they have taken shelter in a tent. “Our most urgent need is a house and water. We saved blankets, clothes and other things and only received a tent as aid. They were trying to survive on rice, tomatoes and potatoes and people also needed food,” Jianhan said.
Aid groups describe Afghanistan’s plight as one of the world’s fastest growing humanitarian crises. According to the United Nations, half the population is now facing acute hunger, more than 9 million people are homeless, and millions of children are out of school.
Previously, the United Nations and its partners launched a funding appeal of $4.4 billion to avert a humanitarian catastrophe in Afghanistan in 2022. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has also warned that millions of Afghans are on the verge of death, and urged the international community to release the Afghans. Freezing assets and launching its banking system.
Local people in the earthquake-stricken areas are grieving the insufficiency of humanitarian assistance from the international community and the Afghan Red Crescent. Access to the affected areas is also limited, such as in Jaén, which is around a river bed with a road marked by mountainous terrain and poor road conditions.
Idle aid trucks on their way to the disaster area are also slowing the delivery of aid. The crowded humanitarian activity in Guyen has dissipated in recent days with few organizations remaining on the ground, while people seem to be accustomed to living in tents. The approach of winter remains the main concern for victims, who say that most tents cannot withstand the cold weather.
Most of the tents were set up near the collapsed homes of local residents or in empty fields. The collapse of public restrooms in the earthquake also added to the hygiene problems experienced by local residents. Earthquake victims sometimes complain of a lack of food, while most spend the day with only one meal. In Central Gayan, most businesses remain closed due to deaths and damages, while a few grocery stores remain open. Another challenge for survivors is power outages, while some are turning to portable solar panels, which are only good for charging their phones or lighting a bulb most of the time.
